Security Tips for the Holidays

During the holiday season most people are thinking of last minute shopping and large meals. However, not everyone considers the holidays a time to celebrate, but rather an opportunity to commit a crime. Unfortunately, the holiday season provides a criminal many opportunities to spoil holiday cheer. Busy parking lots and hurried shoppers are just two elements working of a potential theft. Also, we make his job easier by advertising our recent purchases. By knowing what makes you more likely to be a victim of a Holiday crime, you can take steps to reduce your risk.

Shopping Tips

  • If possible, do your shopping during the day and avoid peak periods.
  • Carry a small purse or fanny pack. This will make you a less attractive target to purse snatchers.
  • Avoid doing all your shopping at once. The tendency would be to have a car full of gifts which increases your chances of your car being broken into.
  • Don’t leave packages visible in your car. Place all valuables in the trunk of your vehicle. Don’t give thieves a reason to break into your car.
  • Don’t hesitate to ask mall security to
    escort you.

Safety at Home

  • Windows: Keep windows secure and install a secondary blocking device on all accessible windows including upper story windows.
  • Alarm Systems: Anyone considering hiring an alarm company or an alarm installer should check to see if they are licensed in Texas as required by Law. Also, you must have a valid City of Dallas Residential Home Alarm Permit. To check to see if an alarm company is licensed in Texas, visit the Texas Department of Public Safety Private Security Board web site.
  • Sliding Glass Doors: Use a secondary locking device on all sliding glass doors. After opening presents, don't place the empty gift boxes on the street for trash pickup (i.e. from big ticket items like laptops, DVD players, stereos, etc.) Burglars appreciate knowing that you have expensive gifts inside for them to steal. Break boxes down or cut them up to conceal the items better.
  • Holidays: After you open your presents, don't pile up empty gift boxes from your new laptop computer, DVD player, stereo receiver, etc. on the street for trash pickup. Burglars appreciate knowing that you have expensive gifts inside for them to steal. Break boxes down or cut them up to conceal the items better. After a lucrative burglary, the chances of being burglarized again increase. Thieves may return to steal the new replacement products.

Neighborhoods Honor Fire Station 26
Representatives of Beverly Hills Neighborhood Association and Kessler Plaza Neighborhood Association visited Fire Station 26, located at Westmoreland and Jefferson, on September 11, 2011 to pay respect and honor our neighborhood fire fighters. Representing Kessler Plaza was Nola Rae Smith.

Pictured in front of Ladder Truck 26 are: D.M. Linn, Barbara Barbee (Beverly Hills), Captain L.T. Reagan, Lieutenant T. M Baker, Nola Rae Smith (Kessler Plaza), Luis Gremaldo, J. Escobedo, D.E. Manners and R.P. Trail.

The neighborhood association also presented the firemen with a floral bouquet. Pictured with the flowers are: R.P. Trail, Lieutenant T. M Baker, and Captain L.T. Reagan.

In addition, Fire Station 26 has lost two of its members in the line of service: Vincent Davis on February 2, 2002 and Todd Krodle on August 14, 2011. A picture of the memorial plaque for Vincent is included. There will be a memorial plaque forthcoming for Todd.
